Booty Babe "Pride of the Maasai"

A couple of weeks ago, I asked you to suggest some new exciting characters to spruce up my boring blog. Binyavanga Wainaina's satirical piece "How to Write About Africa" offered some good advice ("Your African characters may include naked warriors, loyal servants, diviners and seers, ancient wise men living in hermitic splendour. Or corrupt politicians, inept polygamous travel-guides, and prostitutes you have slept with"). Readers of this blog agreed that it would be best to bring in a naked warrior.

So I started looking for naked warriors to blog about. The search was not easy. Some of my finds were fake. Did you know that Kikuyu's are disguising themselves as Maasai on the beaches of Mombasa? Yes, this is because Maasai morans are perceived to be erotic, and old or divorced women from the West come to look for them. Why are morans so attractive to these grannies? Well, morans are always niceley groomed and dressed in red and they also take a lot of herbs - some of which are known to have Viagra-like effects.

Anyway, while searching for naked warriors, I came across an interesting site, Booty Babe Art. Booty Babe Art is Spencer Davis’way of expressing his passion for fantasy art, toys, fashion design, and of course the wonderful variety of female beauty. The project is a tribute to the women that make our day, taking the very definition of “Booty Babe” to new levels.

A Booty Babe is generally a woman with curves. Waist to hip ratio is usually breath-taking. She’s not necessarily run-way model material, in the traditional sense, but she feels sexy and her self-confidence makes her glow. She’s not afraid to wear skin-tight outfits – and we love her for it. Now you’re getting the picture. You’ve seen her at the mall, in line at the bank, grocery shopping, and out dancing. She’s sweet and sexy, stylish and smart; and her body language states, “This is who I am, and I LOVE being me.”

In 1998, with this in mind, artist Spencer Davis started adding clay to an otherwise skinny, 12" fashion doll. Numerous gallery exhibitions, and many iterations later, Spencer’s Booty Babe sculptures, have become his personal canvas with which he expresses his passion for toy collecting, foreign culture, female beauty, fantasy and low brow art.

One of Spencer's dolls is called "Pride of the Maasai". You will see from the pictures that she indeed has curves.

I don't know why Spencer chose to refer to the Maasai when naming this doll. To me, the doll looks more like a girl from any other tribe in Kenya, but not the Maasai. In contrast to this curvy doll, Maasai are always very slim! According to some scientists, this would be mainly because of their protein-rich diet and high activity levels.

But whatever! To me, sizes don't matter, but IQ and a good sense of humor do matter. But of course, if brains and beauty and a nice booty all go together (which is quite rare, unfortunately), I won't say no.

Start your business in Narok instead of Nairobi

The Doing Business in Kenya 2010 report was launched yesterday, just on the heels of the annual Doing Business 2010 report. Globally, Kenya ranked 95 out of 183 economies. One of the reasons it takes longer to start a business in Kenyan localities is the many steps required: 3 more than the Sub-Saharan Africa regional average and 3 times as many as in Senegal.



Narok, Malaba and Thika lead the overall ranking on the four indicators measured in the report (starting a business, dealing with construction permits, registering property, and enforcing contracts). Isiolo, Nairobi and Kilifi lag behind other localities (see Table). Nairobi has the fastest time and lowest cost for starting a business, at 34 days and 36.5 percent of income per capita. But it lags behind other localities in the time needed to register property or enforce a contract through the courts.

The process to obtain construction-related permits and clearances is easiest in Narok, Nyeri and Malaba, but more cumbersome in Isiolo, Thika and Mombasa. Obtaining all permits to build a warehouse and hook it up to utilities takes less than 70 days in Narok, making it the 15th fastest location worldwide, the same as Denmark.

Registering property is fastest in Mombasa, where it takes 23 days (figure 1). In Isiolo, a special transfer tax levied by the County Council makes registering property almost as expensive as in the Syrian Arab Republic, the world’s most expensive place to register property.

Resolving a commercial dispute is speedy in Malaba, because the courts in Bungoma, where these are heard, are strict on adjournments. As a result, the 11 months needed to enforce a contract in Malaba are less than the OECD average (15.5 months).

Doing Business in Kenya 2010, the first subnational report on Kenya, suggests Kenya could improve its ranking by 17 positions simply by adopting best practices already in place in the 11 Kenyan localities covered in the report:

"If a hypothetical city, 'Kenyana', were to adopt the best practices already in place in Kenya, its ranking would improve in all four areas of regulation that are the focus of this study, putting 'Kenyana' in 78th place among the 183 economies measured in the global Doing Business report. That is 17 positions better than Kenya’s current global rank (represented by Nairobi)."

Two excellent updated travel guidebooks on Kenya

I am a collector of travel guidebooks on Kenya. It allows me to know my country better and discover new and exciting places, including the Hippo Point Tower (on the shores of Lake Naivasha), one of the top retreats in the world, one of the most luxurious and less known of Kenyan hideaways, where I would like to book the master room for my dear e-friend Pink M one day: "Custom-built by Dodo Cunningham-Reid for seasoned romantics, guests are able to enjoy breath-taking views over Oloidien Bay and follow at eagle-eye the movements of the hippos grazing at the foot of the Tower. The rustling of the lake and the sounds of the bush create at all hours a magical symphony of peace and tranquillity, broken only by the splashing of water as the hippos venture out into the bush under the cover of darkness. From the first floor verandah nature lovers can enjoy safe and relaxing sunset viewing while the top meditation room is reserved to those who want to plunge silently into the essence of Africa. Okay, enough on that particular place, and back to the travel guidebooks now. Amazingly, several of the best travel guides about Kenya have been written by foreigners. And interestingly, after spending only a couple of months here in Kenya, many of them seem to know our country better than most of us... So, it is time for Kenyans to catch up! Now is a good time, since two of the most respected travel guides have just been updated: Lonely Planet and Footprint.

The new Lonely Planet Kenya Country Guide (7th edition) contains a color wildlife chapter, interviews with locals and a green index with listings for an ecofriendly trip. Note that the book is not available in hardcopy until May 14 or even June, but you can already preview and download individual chapters or the whole book here with 'Pick and Mix'. And yes, Lonely Planet got it very right where it says: "Kenya may be a somewhat more intimidating destination than it once was, but it remains one of the undisputed highlights of Africa. Check your inhibitions, ignore the hype, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for some truly inspiring and life-changing travel." And about our beloved Hippo Point: "We could try and tell you about the absolute lavishness of the main house and the tower, but you'd never believe us - we still can't believe it, and we saw it!"

The second edition of the Footprint Kenya Handbook has also been fully updated and revised. It includes a full-colour 32-page wildlife guide and accommodation listings for all, from luxury tented camps to blissful coastal hideaways. And yes, this book mentions thousands of interesting little things: the cuisine at Hippo Point is superb for example.

I don't really endorse one guide over another, but I am slightly more biased towards the Footprint because it brings me some more surprises, some things I hadn't heard or read about anywhere else. But both books are well-researched and will serve you well.
