So the savings for Kenyans in the diaspora will be a lot bigger than just a sweet or a soda.

Mobile phone operators may also make online credit/debit card purchases of airtime possible in the near future, as is the case in several other countries across the world.

True Love is back, better than ever, now with the Elephant position

A few days after the extremely sweet and intelligent Kenyan blogger Kellie complained about the magazine True Love not living up to her high sexual expectations, the publisher (East African Magazines - EAM) folded. Kellie - the gorgeous 'innocent babe seeking education wherever she can find it where bedroom matters are concerned' - bought a copy of True Love because of the fabulously headlined article: ‘Don’t try this at home! Lessons from couples who get the sex right’, only for her hopes to be totally crushed when she read the full article ("the article read like something written by church people to teach the unmarried youth about sex"). Now, everybody should know that you better don't get an influential blogger like Kellie against you. So this disappointment also meant the end of True Love. RIP.

Yes, yes, I do know mine is bigger than that. And I do know mine is not S-shaped like that. So it may not be very relevant to my own sexual escapades. But still, I think that watching this elephant clip (and listening to the hilarious comments by the lady watching all this) is actually a very good alternative to reading True Love. Or not?

The good news is also that the 'Elephant position' is part of the Kama Sutra. The Elephant position is similar to the too widely known and practiced doggie style, except that the woman lies flat or almost flat on her stomach as a start.

So what is it then?

This is Kenya! Feel welcome to Malili Technopolis. Malili Technopolis will be a new town in Kenya with facilities to support Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) ventures and a science park, a convention centre, shopping mall, hotels, international schools and health facilities. Malili is located about 60 km southeast of Nairobi. Similar cities already exist in Malaysia (PutraJaya), Panama (Pacifico), the Philippines (Subic-Clark) and China (Shenzhen).

According to Brian Longwe of Chanzo Capital, this project looks like a winner and will definitely not become another 'white elephant' being promoted by the Government. But me, I have some doubts... I still remember all our failed Nyayo projects: Nyayo Pioneer Cars, Nyayo Bus Services, Nyayo Tea Zones, and Nyayo School Milk. So are we headed for something similar? Hopefully not, but maybe yes. The main story in the January issue of The Anchor (written by Martin Masai) for example insinuates that a lot of theft and corruption may already be involved in the project. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has been hired for advisory services to the project, but they don't have a very nice track record, so I am not sure whether that's good or bad.

In the same technology sector, but on a completely different scale, another very interesting project has just been launched: iHub: Nairobi's Tech Innovation Hub. iHub is an open space for technologists, investors, tech companies (and hackers, sic) in the Nairobi area. It is a tech community facility with a focus on young entrepreneurs, web and mobile phone programmers and designers. It is part open community workspace (co-working), part investor and VC hub and part incubator. Unlike Malili Technopolis, I really believe in this project: it is simple, realistic, and addresses a real need. And yes, iHub may be small, but at least it has enormous potential to create real impact. iHub will open on March 3rd, 2010 and there's currently a design contest going on for the best logo for iHub.

Start your business in Narok instead of Nairobi

The Doing Business in Kenya 2010 report was launched yesterday, just on the heels of the annual Doing Business 2010 report. Globally, Kenya ranked 95 out of 183 economies. One of the reasons it takes longer to start a business in Kenyan localities is the many steps required: 3 more than the Sub-Saharan Africa regional average and 3 times as many as in Senegal.



Narok, Malaba and Thika lead the overall ranking on the four indicators measured in the report (starting a business, dealing with construction permits, registering property, and enforcing contracts). Isiolo, Nairobi and Kilifi lag behind other localities (see Table). Nairobi has the fastest time and lowest cost for starting a business, at 34 days and 36.5 percent of income per capita. But it lags behind other localities in the time needed to register property or enforce a contract through the courts.

The process to obtain construction-related permits and clearances is easiest in Narok, Nyeri and Malaba, but more cumbersome in Isiolo, Thika and Mombasa. Obtaining all permits to build a warehouse and hook it up to utilities takes less than 70 days in Narok, making it the 15th fastest location worldwide, the same as Denmark.

Registering property is fastest in Mombasa, where it takes 23 days (figure 1). In Isiolo, a special transfer tax levied by the County Council makes registering property almost as expensive as in the Syrian Arab Republic, the world’s most expensive place to register property.

Resolving a commercial dispute is speedy in Malaba, because the courts in Bungoma, where these are heard, are strict on adjournments. As a result, the 11 months needed to enforce a contract in Malaba are less than the OECD average (15.5 months).

Doing Business in Kenya 2010, the first subnational report on Kenya, suggests Kenya could improve its ranking by 17 positions simply by adopting best practices already in place in the 11 Kenyan localities covered in the report:

"If a hypothetical city, 'Kenyana', were to adopt the best practices already in place in Kenya, its ranking would improve in all four areas of regulation that are the focus of this study, putting 'Kenyana' in 78th place among the 183 economies measured in the global Doing Business report. That is 17 positions better than Kenya’s current global rank (represented by Nairobi)."

Kazuri - Beads of Change

Kazuri - which means "small and beautiful" in Kiswahili - began in 1975 as a tiny workshop experimenting in making handmade beads. I discovered them much later, but how I love those beads now! I have bought many of their necklaces, there is so much variety to choose from that I will never get bored buying more of them for more friends and family.

The ceramic beads are made from clay from the Mount Kenya area which is dug by hand. Each bead is shaped by hand by one of the more then 300 women employed by Kazuri without the aid of molds, forms or any modern machinery. The beads are then hand painted in a wide range of designs that shine with a kaleidoscope of African colors. The beautiful beads are painted with high gloss paint, and then glazed to produce a smooth, decorated product.

The beads are known for their Kenyan art that reflects a culture and appeal to a worldwide fashion market. Kazuri's beautifully finished products are made to an international standard and are sold worldwide. Kazuri produces over 5 million beads per year.

As every piece of jewellery is handmade, every one is unique. Indeed, many pieces take on the quirks and trademarks of the women who shape the beads, paint them or string them, giving them soul as well as beauty. Many Kazuri styles are named after areas, tribes and other features of the Kenyan landscape; evocative names that resonate with the organic nature of the clay that comes from its earth. So a Kazuri piece is more than an item of jewellery, it's a piece of Kenya.

Eco Cabs: driving green in style, first ever in Kenya!

Another green post. As I was preparing my recent article on enjoying our "Green City in the Sun", I saw this very nice green animal:




I had never seen such a strange animal before. Apparently, it is one of the new Toyota Prius Eco Cabs. Eco Cabs is a new fleet of hybrid taxis in Nairobi that provide customers with high standard services and the option of driving green in style. Eco Cabs has been launched to showcase the concept of green transport and to inspire other businesses to make a meaningful transformation towards greener processes. Eco Cabs produce over 60% less emissions compared with other vehicles with the same engine size when driving within the city. The cabs are designed to symbolize the green concept: they are all painted green with a green leaf signifying how green the cabs are.

Ironically, the Eco-cab was parked at one of the petrol stations in Nairobi... what a nice contrast!

Two excellent updated travel guidebooks on Kenya

I am a collector of travel guidebooks on Kenya. It allows me to know my country better and discover new and exciting places, including the Hippo Point Tower (on the shores of Lake Naivasha), one of the top retreats in the world, one of the most luxurious and less known of Kenyan hideaways, where I would like to book the master room for my dear e-friend Pink M one day: "Custom-built by Dodo Cunningham-Reid for seasoned romantics, guests are able to enjoy breath-taking views over Oloidien Bay and follow at eagle-eye the movements of the hippos grazing at the foot of the Tower. The rustling of the lake and the sounds of the bush create at all hours a magical symphony of peace and tranquillity, broken only by the splashing of water as the hippos venture out into the bush under the cover of darkness. From the first floor verandah nature lovers can enjoy safe and relaxing sunset viewing while the top meditation room is reserved to those who want to plunge silently into the essence of Africa. A romantic morning breakfast is served outside, under the towering acacias, while in the evening intimate candlelit dinners bring the guests back to bygone days of wild simplicity and unspoiled elegance."

Okay, enough on that particular place, and back to the travel guidebooks now. Amazingly, several of the best travel guides about Kenya have been written by foreigners. And interestingly, after spending only a couple of months here in Kenya, many of them seem to know our country better than most of us... So, it is time for Kenyans to catch up! Now is a good time, since two of the most respected travel guides have just been updated: Lonely Planet and Footprint.

The new Lonely Planet Kenya Country Guide (7th edition) contains a color wildlife chapter, interviews with locals and a green index with listings for an ecofriendly trip. Note that the book is not available in hardcopy until May 14 or even June, but you can already preview and download individual chapters or the whole book here with 'Pick and Mix'. And yes, Lonely Planet got it very right where it says: "Kenya may be a somewhat more intimidating destination than it once was, but it remains one of the undisputed highlights of Africa. Check your inhibitions, ignore the hype, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for some truly inspiring and life-changing travel." And about our beloved Hippo Point: "We could try and tell you about the absolute lavishness of the main house and the tower, but you'd never believe us - we still can't believe it, and we saw it!"

The second edition of the Footprint Kenya Handbook has also been fully updated and revised. It includes a full-colour 32-page wildlife guide and accommodation listings for all, from luxury tented camps to blissful coastal hideaways. And yes, this book mentions thousands of interesting little things: the cuisine at Hippo Point is superb for example.

I don't really endorse one guide over another, but I am slightly more biased towards the Footprint because it brings me some more surprises, some things I hadn't heard or read about anywhere else. But both books are well-researched and will serve you well.

The monetary value of Kenyan Tweets

I did a rather controversial post recently on the monetary value of Kenyan blogs. And today, the growing popularity of the micro-blogging site Twitter in Kenya made me wonder whether Tweets also have a value. And yes, apparently some people sell their Twitter profile background graphic to advertisers at a price based on various factors. You can use What's Your Tweet Worth? to calculate the approximate value of your Tweet per month by simply entering a username into the site. I just ran the applet for 10 of my favourite Kenyan Tweets, and here are the results:

Let's export KPLC's expertise to save our Planet and generate some much needed income for Kenya

Nairobi will join over 1,000 cities on March 28th in observing Earth Hour, a global event that seeks to raise awareness on the need for action by world leaders against global warming. Cities marking the event across the globe will switch off all lights on major landmarks for one hour. I found this announcement quite amusing, because we are very used to a situation without lights here in Kenya, courtesy of KPLC. How often do we go without power and lighting in Nairobi for an hour or so? It happens every week, so what is so special about this Earth Hour?



This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into "the world’s first global election", between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote: switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF is urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard. Eighty countries have already pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009.

If Earth Hour is indeed so important to world citizens in order to save our Planet, I think we should start exporting KPLC's expertise. These guys really know all about switching off the lights for an hour or so (or even longer without special requests). Let's charge exorbitant consultancy fees to other countries to hire this expertise from us. With the income generated, we could feed some starving Kenyans or pay the costs of some interesting Commissions. Since this years's Earth Hour will also be "the world’s first global election", I am sure that WWF will also need some good expertise in how to run elections in a fair and efficient way, but I would suggest they go and look for that kind of advice outside of Kenya... Dane Carlson created a little applet which computes and displays your blog's worth. Just type in the URL for your blog, and it will return its overall value. Of course, the accuracy of the approach is debatable, as the value of a blog can be subjective and case specific, but it is still worth checking out. Safaricom and Western Union: From hate to love relationship?

Vodafone announced a partnership today with Western Union to allow international money transfers via mobile phones, as the wireless carrier seeks to tap into the increasing flow of cross-border remittances, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The pilot programme allows residents of Reading in the UK to send money to family members and friends in Kenya, where Vodafone is the 40% owner of Safaricom. If that programme is successful, the companies will expand it to other countries.
The service enables customers to send cross-border remittances from select locations directly to Safaricom mobile subscribers in Kenya generally in minutes. The initiative uses Western Union´s trusted global "hub" for processing cross-border remittances. It builds on the success of M-PESA, a mobile money transfer service in Kenya offered by Vodafone and Safaricom, which has attracted over 4 million customers since its launch in March 2007.

The pilot will take place through a select number of Western Union agents based in Reading. Consumers can send funds to any Safaricom mobile subscriber in Kenya in a matter of minutes. Receivers can use their funds in a variety of ways, including visiting one of 4,000 M-PESA agents in Kenya to withdraw their cash, or forwarding it on to another mobile phone in Kenya.

"The successful take-up of M-PESA in Kenya has clearly demonstrated the demand for easily accessible, secure cash payment services in emerging markets," said Nick Hughes, Vodafone’s Head of International Mobile Payments. "Our partnership with Western Union allows M-PESA subscribers to receive international remittances and builds on the demand we have already seen domestically in Kenya."

"This program aligns a global leader in money-transfer services, the world´s largest mobile operator group, and arguably one of the most impressive success stories in mobile money," said Matt Dill, Senior Vice President, Western Union Digital Ventures. "In offering M-PESA users the opportunity to receive funds from abroad for the first time, these three companies are changing the way money moves around the globe."

Michael Joseph, CEO of Safaricom, said, "This is another great step for M-PESA and will benefit many Kenyans all over the world. International remittances form a significant part of the total income for some Kenyans and the partnership with Western Union will provide Kenyans with an opportunity to receive small values of cash from abroad in a fast, safe and affordable way."

There are many benefits of using mobile phones for micro-transactions in a country like Kenya, where few people have bank accounts and over 10 million people have mobile phones. Furthermore, increased global migration has led to a significant increase in the flow of funds from expatriate migrant workers who send money home. Get lifted by Novida: a new life for 25 bob

'Novida' is Portuguese for 'new life'. And you can now get that new life in Nairobi for only 25 bob!

A new non-alcoholic, malt-based, fruit-flavoured soft drink named 'Novida' was launched this week in Nairobi by Coca-Cola. I had the opportunity to taste it yesterday, as some beautiful girls in sexy miniskirts were distributing some cans for free on some highways and major roundabouts. My friend initially thought this was a new scantily dressed basketball team on their way to Kasarani, but no, this was the Novida promotion team. Novida comes in three flavours: pineapple, apple and tropical. A 300 ml bottle retails at KSh 25/- and a 250 ml slim can at KSh 45/-. It is not every day that you get a free present worth KSh 45/- from an attractive girl in Nairobi, so I decided I would give it a try. I got the pineapple flavoured version, produced on the 24th of October 2008 and expiring on the 3rd of July 2009. The ingredients are: carbonated water, sugar, acidulants: citric and malic acid, malt extract, stabilizers, flavourants, preservatives: potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. Basically very much the same as the ingredients I listed in my message on Alvaro. It is only the quillaja extract which is missing in Novida, and that may be the reason why the foam on Novida is not lasting as long as the foam on Alvaro. As far as the taste is concerned, I found my Novida Pineapple to be quite refreshing and very similar to Alvaro Pineapple, maybe just a touch sweeter.

Strangely enough, the can indicates "canned by Coca-Cola caners of Southern Africa (PTY) Ltd., 96 Mullet Street, Wadeville 1407, South Africa under authority of Schweppes Holdings Ltd." I mean, firstly, do we really have to import this from South Africa or could this be done locally as well? And secondly, shouldn't it read 'Coca-Cola canners' instead of 'Coca-Cola caners'? 'Caning' is something completely different from 'canning', and I hope there is a ban on caning in South Africa just like in Kenya. This could become quite a disturbing typo for Coca-Cola...

No matter how many new Alvaro- or Novida-type drinks may still be launched, I think I will always still prefer water, Kenyan quality coffee, and fresh natural juices, basically because these new drinks are just flavours and not the real natural thing as I already described in my earlier post on Alvaro. Well, it looks like we have a second one now, at least for DVD's: Quick Flicks Store. They claim to be Kenya's premier online DVD store and are selling DVD's from KSh 200. You can browse their online catalogue and place an order. The DVD's are then delivered by courier (at KSh 100) to your doorstep within Nairobi and its environs in 1-2 days. You pay cash on delivery (currently the only payment option).


Anyone tried this service? Could it be trusted (they only give a mobile phone number as contact on their site...)?
