The much anticipated Huawei IDEOS U8150 phone has been launched in Kenya.

The IDEOS was announced last September by Huawei as a low cost handset that the Chinese manufacturer had worked on in collaboration with Google. Depicted as a low end smartphone, the IDEOS is anticipated to be a game changer, all at a reasonable price.

The phone comes with Android 2.2, a 2.8 inch colour touch screen, 3G HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps, a 3.2 Mp camera, WI-FI and Bluetooth. The phone retails at Ksh 8,499/- and is bundled with Ksh 1,000/- airtime plus 600 Mb of data. This means a US$100 smartphone has finally arrived! This is exactly the right move in bringing Android to the masses in Kenya.

It's the best cheap phone currently available and it runs on Android, so the question is not really whether you will buy the IDEOS (of course you will), but which one you will buy. Which one? Yes, which one! This thing comes in different colors, so you will have to decide on the color. The phone comes in four different colors: black, blue, purple and yellow.

The science of color psychology may help us in deciding which color of IDEOS to buy:

Black: Black is often used as a symbol of menace or evil, but it is also popular as an indicator of authority and power. Kenya has been having a special relation with the United Kingdom since colonial times. We share part of our history, a bit of friendship and some political, economic, commercial & cultural interests. Free SMS from Gmail to Safaricom

Staying in touch with your girls is important

Did you know that you can now send free SMS to your friends on Safaricom directly from your Gmail account? Try Gmail SMS and start texting your friends from your computer.

You can send SMS messages to your contacts’ mobile phones using Gmail Chat. If your contact replies, the text message response will appear as a reply in Chat. These conversations are stored in your Chat history just like regular chats.





Sending and receiving a message from Gmail to any phone is free. When replying with an SMS from phone to Gmail, you will be charged a regular SMS rate by your mobile provider. Gmail SMS is currently available in Kenya with Safaricom.

1. Log into your Gmail account. In the Send SMS box above Chat, enter the phone number you want to send a SMS to.
2. In the dialog box, enter Contact name of the SMS recipient and check that country and phone number are correct. Then, click Save.
3. Type your message in the chat window and hit Enter.
4. Your message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

Try it out! It seems to work fine.

SMALL UPDATE: In some cases, e.g. when you are logging in to your Gmail account from abroad, the Gmail SMS feature is not automatically activated (and you can't see the Send SMS box in Gmail). Here's a solution. Try going to Google Labs, select Gmail Labs and enable "SMS in Chat gadget" and "Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat". That should do the trick, like it did for @kenyanpundit.

Google SMS Search now available in Kenya

Google SMS Search is now available in Kenya. Google SMS Search provides access to information through a mobile phone without needing to access the Internet. You simply create an SMS message about what you are looking for and send it to the Google SMS short code (4664 or "GOOG") and wait for a response via SMS. The service is free from Google, but carrier charges do apply. It is currently supported by Safaricom only.

For Google SMS Search, you need to indicate what topic you would like information for and then what you want to know. You can search for news headlines on a topic you are interested in. For example, send "news obama" or "n obama" to 4664 to get news headlines about Obama. They currently have both major international news sources as well as local ones. You can also get the top headlines by category, for example, "news sports" will return the top sports headlines.

Sports scores
Send "score manchester" to get the latest scores and standings for the team and many more!

Stock quotes (Share prices)
Send "stock GOOG" or "stock SCOM" to get current share prices from the NSE and international stocks.

Foreign Exchange 
Send "1000 KES in USD" to get current foreign exchange rates for major currencies

Definitions

Celtel / Zain vs. Safaricom

This morning, I received the following sms: "A wonderful world coming your way on August 1st 2008. Stay connected." Then I checked the sender of this stupid message. Sender: 254733100111. Oh, so this must be coming from Celtel. This must have something to do with the launch of their Zain brand.

Also this morning, I received an invitation from Safaricom: "Come Experience Safaricom's Open Day". Saturday August 2nd to Sunday 3rd 2008. Venue: Westlands Car Park (next to Pizza Garden). Time: 10:00am - 5:00 pm, Entry: FREE. It is probably not a coincidence that Safaricom organizes this at the time that Celtel is launching its Zain brand, so competition seems to be heating up again. But Safaricom should have realized that this is actually an Open Week-End rather than an Open Day... A day usually just lasts a day, while a week-end is usually two days.
