I just came across a blog supposedly written by Sue, a prostitute working on Koinange Street: Nairobi Nights. It has well-written and entertaining stories about a working girl in Nairobi. The stories are well written and quite entertaining.


"My name is Sue. I practice along Koinange Street, Nairobi. These are thoughts, observations and experiences from my prostitution world. Nothing of the soft, sympathy seeking topsy turvy kind. But straight talk, hard facts and real anecdotes. They are worth something."

The sexy 'girl' has already written 10 episodes so far, including blog posts with exciting titles such as "The Spiritual Role Of A Prostitute", "When Sex Is No Longer Sin", "Let The Pee Flow", "Why Should I Not Open My Legs?" and "I can't Feel Your Thing".

In her latest post, she refers to one of her teachers in high school who came up with an interesting metaphor, comparing a girl to a tin of cocoa:


"A female teacher in the mixed boarding school that I attended used to compare us girls to a tin of cocoa; you remember the one which had a foil inside. "The first time you let a man touch your breasts or private parts, then you have opened the lid. The moment you lose your virginity, the foil is gone. After that, every time you have sex, the cocoa gets depleted. If you are not careful the rightful owner will find there is nothing left for him". At the face of it, it was a polite way to dissuade us from adolescence sex, but a little deeper it implied we girls didn't really belong to ourselves but to some man somewhere, who was supposed to have all the cocoa. Our role in society it seemed was to prepare for this man."


And in another recent post, Sue writes:


"Our value decreases as your experience increases. Quoting five years experience is a turn off. Many a girl gets to prostitution telling themselves they wont do it for more than a few months, maybe six, save some money, start a business , hit it big in some way or get a 'proper' job. But a year goes and another still on the street. The optimal experience is about a year; when one is no longer surprised by the antics of men and all the inhibitions are gone. After a year there is a plateau and then the downward curve starts."

Kenya Census: There are 20 camels in Nairobi

The results of Kenya's 2009 census were finally released this week. There were 38,610,097 people in Kenya, according to the official 2009 population census figures. We are now more than 39 million and counting, since two Kenyan children are born every minute.

Interestingly, the census also revealed there are 20 camels in Nairobi. What are these camels doing in Nairobi? My best guess is that there may be a few at Mamba Village or at Splash Waterworld; as well as some 'roaming' ones which can be hired for birthday and other parties.





Camels can be used for multiple purposes

There are about 3 million camels in Kenya, which shows the importance of the animal to Kenyans. In Nairobi's Eistleigh estate, business is brisk in camel meat and milk. Vital Camel Milk in Nanyuki is the world's first dairy plant which processes camel milk and value added products as health food. Regular camel milk consumption contributes to an optimum diabetes management. Camel milk has positive effects in controlling high blood pressure and helps in the management of arteriosclerosis and osteoporosis. Camel milk contains potent anti-bacterial and anti-viral factors. Recovery from infectious desease (e.g. tuberculosis) is significantly faster in patients consuming camel milk regularly.

Camels are also being used as solar-powered mobile health clinics, mobile libraries and mobile schools. In those parts of Kenya worst affected by persistent droughts, the next generation of pastoralists is growing up with a greater understanding of the camel's role. Efforts to introduce school children to camel-keeping are going well. With camels on the curriculum, and kept within the school grounds, pupils learn camel care and how best to hygienically collect, process and market the milk. And yes, nowadays you can even go on a camel safari.

TGIF: Thank God It's Friday!

The Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" was a very controversial music video when it was first released. Why? The video features a first-person point of view of someone going clubbing, indulging in large amounts of drugs and alcohol, getting into fist fights with men, abusing women and picking up a lap dancer and having sex with her as well. At the end of the video the camera pans over to... Well, I won't tell anything more, just watch it for yourself, but I can't see anything wrong with this video. The video gets me in the right mood for a night out of bar-hopping between Skylux Lounge, Club Gallileo, Black Diamond (yes Naomi!), Havana, Bacchus, Gypsies, Lido's, F3 Pango, Madhouse, Modern Green, Chillers, Apple Bees and of course Rafikiz.



The National Organization for Women (NOW) criticized the song and its music video. NOW stated that the lyrics are a "...dangerous and offensive message advocating violence against women." NOW also believed that the lyrics are in reference to administering heroin (smack) to another person. Well, I don't think so. Distracted by a sexy billboard

Nivea takes care of your body

We've seen them everywhere in Nairobi - scantily clad women on huge roadside billboards. Last month, I almost caused an accident while driving because I was distracted by this Nivea billboard.

I know those ads are put up to get attention, but if there would have been a major road accident, who should be held responsible? Me for being distracted, Nivea for creating a disturbing ad, or Nairobi City Council for not banning such ads? In South Africa for example, Cape Town authorities for example have refused to allow sexy billboards.

Distracted driving is dangerous. Is it fair to ask men not to look? Apparently, they can't help themselves - it's how they're wired. If we can have laws against driving while using a cellphone (and even have fines for pedestrians crossing the road while talking on their mobile phones), why can't we also ban these billboards? Maybe because these advertisers are a good source of income for Nairobi City Council?

We already have too many traffic jams in Nairobi, don't we? These billboards are not good for a smooth flow of traffic. In Metro Manila in the Philippines, the sexy billboards allegedly slow down traffic.

There are loads and loads of big billboards in Metro Manila. They are not only big, they also have a lot of provocative images. Allan does not advocate sexy billboards. His blog simply chronicles all the sexy billboards in Metro Manila (and the rest of the Philippines) so that readers can take the necessary action to cause the advertisers to exercise propriety and exhibit prudence in deciding what to put up on a billboard.

British motorists have admitted that they have been so distracted by sexy billboards that they have dangerously veered from their lane. One in five men have said that they have diverted their eyes to look at scantily clad women on a billboard. However, only one in 10 women were affected by the sight of a scantily clad man on a billboard.

@RafikiKenya: Let me start by congratulating you again on being voted the first ever Miss Twitter Kenya. I found the competition to be a lot of fun, and I hope you enjoyed it too. What were your first feelings when you learned that you won?
@Queen_Lucky: First off, thank you for the opportunity to participate in this competition! It introduced me to so many other Kenyans on Twitter to whom I thought never existed. I believed the Kenyan Twitter community was very small; I was shown otherwise. When I found out I won I was speechless, I couldn't believe it. I had checked the scores in the late evening and I was 150 behind. I had given up, so when I found out I had won, I was euphoric!!! Started celebrating immediately!

Rafiki: When did you join Twitter and why?
Lucky: I joined Twitter about a year and a half ago. As much as I love Facebook, it was getting full and I was out looking for the newest social network. Even though it took sometime to grow on me. I loved the concept from the beginning limited characters to type, very open, organized, minimal applications to clutter my notifications to my email. The more I tweeted, the funner it became. Also the idea of receiving newsfeeds from local news channels and international made it twice the fun.

Lucky: I mainly tweet about my life, the things I'm doing, my future endeavours, the people in my life... besides it says there before you tweet "whats on your mind", so I blurt out immediately! You will find me tweeting about topical issues as well when I find them relevant to my 1,800 followers and feel like we can relate and discuss.

Rafiki: Who's your best friend and your worst enemy on Twitter?
Lucky: Best friend on twitter... This is a tough one. There really isn't one. I will name my top 5 of course besides you (@RafikiKenya) @jeddylicious @crystalachieng @luckywandish @queenkazi @mmirinima Worst enemy... I actually do not have one! I am a friendly person, making enemies is very difficult for me.


Rafiki: How do you see the Kenyan Twitterverse evolving in the near future?
Lucky: Twitter is not being exploited to the full here in Kenya. It is great for advertising as I found out during my last event "Naija Nite". Although many have not caught on with its numerous advantages I believe in the future many people will join and cease the opportunity to market themselves or their business; or even just be themselves and have fun doing it.

Rafiki: Apart from tweeting, what do you do?
Lucky: I am the Head of Marketing and Advertising of a financial solutions service company in Nairobi. Along with that I am a student at USIU majoring in International Relations and a minor in Japanese and Marketing.

Rafiki: Your profile picture attracted a lot of attention during the Miss Twitter Kenya competition, for several reasons I guess. Are you sure your boobies are for real?
Lucky: OMG! Cannot believe you asked this. Yes, my breasts are 100% real! And I don't know why else it would attract attention... I found the picture very wholesome and simple however to others they saw the contrary.


Rafiki: And at a certain point in the Miss Twitter Kenya competition, you wanted to change your profile picture. Why?
Lucky: Haha. Too many comments regarding my breasts. I was not uncomfortable with the comments... I just didn't want people voting for me for the wrong reasons and I have a beautiful smile and eyes and none of that was captured in my profile picture for the competition. So I wanted to change, but then I realized it would spark too many questions so I declined.

Lucky: I am still thinking about it, but I would like to do something to empower young people through debate and engage them in critical thinking. I am the Chairperson of the Kenya Debate Team, so I feel I may have something to offer in that area.

Rafiki: Among other things, you won a night for two at the luxurious Tribe Hotel in Nairobi. Who will your King Lucky at Tribe Hotel?
Lucky: This may disappoint a lot of people... but there will be NO King. I am actually going with my sister Jeddy. She was my campaign manager through out the competition and if I wanna have optimum fun there is no one else to share the experience with.

On Friday I announced the first ever Miss Twitter Kenya contest, accepting nominations for girls to become Miss Twitter Kenya, based on free and fair online elections. Candidates should be on Twitter with quite interesting tweets, a rather beautiful profile picture, and an acceptable number of followers.

Since Friday, I have been receiving a lot of response on this contest, something I hadn't really expected when I launched it. And today, I received the excellent news on Twitter from @TribeHotelKenya that the fabulous Tribe Hotel in Nairobi, which is currently featuring on the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller’s Hot Lists for 2010, will be giving away one night for two in a Deluxe Room on Bed and Breakfast basis. Initially Tribe Hotel was asked to offer dinner for two, but they decided to raise the stakes by giving away a room! This now also makes it even much more fun for the participants and the voters, as it will be somewhat more 'tricky' for the winner of this exciting Miss Twitter Kenya contest to choose a partner for the night rather than just for dinner.

Tribe Hotel is an excellent example of a business that has fully embraced Web 2.0 tools such as Twitter and Facebook to interact with its customers and advertise its events.

Doodle for Google - let a Kenyan win this World Cup!

Google announced today an exciting international initiative for young people called "Doodle 4 Google - I love football". The drawing competition invites aspiring young artists to design their own Google logo inspired by the theme "I love football". The winning Doodle will be displayed internationally on the Google homepage for a day the day of the World Cup Final - July 11, 2010. This will be the first ever international Doodle 4 Google competition, and it’s the first time Google is running this competition in Africa – in Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.

The Doodle 4 Google competition is open to all children in the participating countries aged 4 to 17. Young artists are being asked to create an image around the love of football, regardless of which specific team they support.

In judging the Doodles, Google will be looking for designs that capture the spirit of football and fair play, show artistic merit and creativity, and express a love of the game in their title and supporting statement. The contest has two levels: national and international. The national winning Doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage of the relevant country for 24 hours in June.

The national winner will then automatically be entered into the global competition, in which the public from around the world will vote for their overall favorite Doodle.

National contest – Get your art featured in Kenya

Google employees from Google Africa will select the top 40 doodles and invite the finalists to an event in Nairobi, in which the national winner will be announced. The national winning doodle will be displayed on the Kenyan Google homepage for 24 hours.

Shuga: Cool Movie About Sex, Major Hype in Kenya

Fast forward to 2009, 18 years later...

Shuga, MTV’s Staying Alive hard-hitting drama is screening on Kenyan television stations. Shuga follows the lives and loves of a group of cool young students whose bright lives and fabulous futures are balanced on a knife-edge due to their love of risk and danger. It's a story about sex with a great story line and good actors. Ayira, a modern girl who knows exactly what she wants and what she’ll do to get it; but will her passion for an older man come at the expense of long term soul mate Ty?



We like Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Ayira, because she is a great main act, has lips to die for, and her sex scenes are oh so hot cool! Ayira is a beautiful, confident and vivacious 22-year-old, grade-A college student. Originally from Langata she now lives in Buru Buru with her mom and little sister. Her father left Ayira's mom for another woman six years ago - an act which deeply affected Ayira. She is now determined to get her mother and sister out of the financial strain her father left them in, and see a return to the comfortable life they once enjoyed. She has a steady, loving boyfriend called Ty, however Ayira is distrustful of men due to her father's behavior. She wants more and she wants it quickly. Her hunger and impatience for life clouds her judgment and sense of values.

Shuga is generating quite a buzz in Kenya, the series actually seems to be quite appealing to the young urban middle and high classes. Shuga seems to challenge young people and is igniting a movement to change their sexual behaviour. It's educating, it's provocative, it's funny: "Don't let your erection determine your direction!" Kenyan youths are asking each other: "Who are you in Shuga?" It's amazing, young people have even gone for tests after seeing this movie. Others, who are not that interested in the sex aspects, are saying Kenya has actually great potential for a vibrant movie industry.

Fine, enough said. Time to watch the three episodes now. Let me know what you think.

Shuga Episode 1: Diva has hopes of the high life, meanwhile the fast boys flex their masculinity and Virginia plays hard to get.



Shuga Episode 2: The Fast boys get caught slipping, while Ayira thinks she is playing Felix, meanwhile everything becomes clear with why Virginia has been acting distant. It all goes pear shaped for the fast boys, as Leo Kenneth and Skola wake up regretting the night before, sweating over some bad news. Meanwhile Ayira thinks she is playing new squeeze Felix, but is she the one in control? Or does he have much more to gain from her than she does him? And what about the implications with long term man Ty? We find out the reason behind Virginia’s erratic behaviour, she’s been hiding something from Leo.



Shuga Episode 3: Everything comes to a head in the final episode, Ayira has it all to lose, and Skola is free falling to his lowest point.

Start your business in Narok instead of Nairobi

The Doing Business in Kenya 2010 report was launched yesterday, just on the heels of the annual Doing Business 2010 report. Globally, Kenya ranked 95 out of 183 economies. One of the reasons it takes longer to start a business in Kenyan localities is the many steps required: 3 more than the Sub-Saharan Africa regional average and 3 times as many as in Senegal.



Narok, Malaba and Thika lead the overall ranking on the four indicators measured in the report (starting a business, dealing with construction permits, registering property, and enforcing contracts). Isiolo, Nairobi and Kilifi lag behind other localities (see Table). Nairobi has the fastest time and lowest cost for starting a business, at 34 days and 36.5 percent of income per capita. But it lags behind other localities in the time needed to register property or enforce a contract through the courts.

The process to obtain construction-related permits and clearances is easiest in Narok, Nyeri and Malaba, but more cumbersome in Isiolo, Thika and Mombasa. Obtaining all permits to build a warehouse and hook it up to utilities takes less than 70 days in Narok, making it the 15th fastest location worldwide, the same as Denmark.

Registering property is fastest in Mombasa, where it takes 23 days (figure 1). In Isiolo, a special transfer tax levied by the County Council makes registering property almost as expensive as in the Syrian Arab Republic, the world’s most expensive place to register property.

Resolving a commercial dispute is speedy in Malaba, because the courts in Bungoma, where these are heard, are strict on adjournments. As a result, the 11 months needed to enforce a contract in Malaba are less than the OECD average (15.5 months).

Doing Business in Kenya 2010, the first subnational report on Kenya, suggests Kenya could improve its ranking by 17 positions simply by adopting best practices already in place in the 11 Kenyan localities covered in the report:

"If a hypothetical city, 'Kenyana', were to adopt the best practices already in place in Kenya, its ranking would improve in all four areas of regulation that are the focus of this study, putting 'Kenyana' in 78th place among the 183 economies measured in the global Doing Business report. That is 17 positions better than Kenya’s current global rank (represented by Nairobi)."

Sauti Sol: Refreshing Kenyan music now available to the world

The refreshingly creative Kenyan band Sauti Sol consists of Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno, who met in high school and originally started as an a capella group.

The group is inspired by the choices, consequences and challenges that the Kenyan youth face and the need to revamp the music industry with a different unique sound that cuts across all age groups. Musically, their inspiration comes from the music of Fadhili Williams, Daudi Kabaka and other established African artists such as Salif Keita and Lokua Kanza. Eclecticsoul describes Sauti Sol's music appropriately as "afro fusion/neo soul sound that soothes, grooves and moves your mind, your body, your soul and takes it to that secret place where music meets heaven".

Their first album "Mwanzo" is an excellent fusion of delightful African sounds with a modern urban feel. Most of the songs are extremely well received when performed live among Sauti Sol's continuously growing fan-base.

The complete album "Mwanzo" will be available for download from Amazon from Tuesday, 4th of August 2009.



Sauti Sol will be going on tour to Europe at the end of August. This is a good opportunity for the band to showcase their great talent and show the world a little of Kenya's musical scene. Kazuri - Beads of Change

Kazuri - which means "small and beautiful" in Kiswahili - began in 1975 as a tiny workshop experimenting in making handmade beads. I discovered them much later, but how I love those beads now! I have bought many of their necklaces, there is so much variety to choose from that I will never get bored buying more of them for more friends and family.

The ceramic beads are made from clay from the Mount Kenya area which is dug by hand. Each bead is shaped by hand by one of the more then 300 women employed by Kazuri without the aid of molds, forms or any modern machinery. The beads are then hand painted in a wide range of designs that shine with a kaleidoscope of African colors. The beautiful beads are painted with high gloss paint, and then glazed to produce a smooth, decorated product.

The beads are known for their Kenyan art that reflects a culture and appeal to a worldwide fashion market. Kazuri's beautifully finished products are made to an international standard and are sold worldwide. Kazuri produces over 5 million beads per year.

As every piece of jewellery is handmade, every one is unique. Fresh, local and... organic!

And here we go again with another green post - this time about an interesting event taking place every month in Nairobi: the Organic Farmers Market at the River Garden Centre (off Limuru Rd, 500 m past Village Market on your way to Runda). This market provides consumers an opportunity to purchase and get more information regarding organic foods.

Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and yourself.

The organic sector in Kenya is still relatively small but growing fast. Small-scale organic agricultural activities in Kenya are represented by the Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN). The network aims at developing and promoting local and export markets, supporting development of affordable local certification capacity and creating awareness of market opportunities in the organic sector. You can get some relatively interesting things from their website, including a document on how to assure organic quality standards are met.

The next Organic Farmers Market is taking place this Saturday (May 30th, 2009). Eco Cabs: driving green in style, first ever in Kenya!

Another green post. As I was preparing my recent article on enjoying our "Green City in the Sun", I saw this very nice green animal:




I had never seen such a strange animal before. Apparently, it is one of the new Toyota Prius Eco Cabs. Eco Cabs is a new fleet of hybrid taxis in Nairobi that provide customers with high standard services and the option of driving green in style. Eco Cabs has been launched to showcase the concept of green transport and to inspire other businesses to make a meaningful transformation towards greener processes. Eco Cabs produce over 60% less emissions compared with other vehicles with the same engine size when driving within the city. The cabs are designed to symbolize the green concept: they are all painted green with a green leaf signifying how green the cabs are.

Ironically, the Eco-cab was parked at one of the petrol stations in Nairobi... what a nice contrast!

Avoid Nairobbery, enjoy the Green City in the Sun

Over the years, Nairobi has been referred to by different nicknames. Once hailed as the '(Green) City in the Sun', our Kenyan capital has increasingly been depicted over the past decade or so as reeling under violent crime where crooks with weapons - some only toys but frighteningly realistic - roam with impunity. But I have the impression Nairobi may be regaining the lost image of the 'Green City in the Sun'. And there are a few simple things we can all do and a few tips and tricks we can follow to avoid Nairobbery, and to enjoy the Green City in the Sun. The first part of my post is focused on avoiding Nairobbery, the second part deals with taking full advantage of the Green City in the Sun.

Part I: Avoid Nairobbery

Nairobi is sometimes regarded as one of the most dangerous cities in Africa. Carjackings, snatchings, muggings and violent robberies seem to be happening on a daily basis. Based on several sources, your favorite blog Rafiki Kenya has now identified some of the most dangerous spots in Nairobi where organized crime (especially mugging and robbery) is rampant. Most criminals target unsuspecting pedestrians. Please fasten your wallets and enjoy your flight:

• Haile Selassie Avenue - Moi Avenue roundabout: mostly from 6 pm.
  
• Globe Cinema roundabout (especially near Kirinyaga Road junction): anytime of the day/night.
  
• River Road junction with Accra and Ronald Ngala street: anytime of the day/night.
  
• Area around Latema Road and River Road: mainly petty theft during the day, no-go area at night.
• Tom Mboya Street at Ambassador Hotel and junction of Accra and Ronald Ngala Street: mostly from 4.30 pm.
  
• Most parts of Mfangano Street: anytime of the day/night.
  
• Area between Serena Hotel to Kenyatta Avenue roundabout: Mostly early in the morning and from 5 pm.
  
• Uhuru park: to be avoided after 5 pm (on working days), tends to accumulate all kinds of dodgy characters.
  
• Mbagathi Way footbridge: from 6 pm.
  
• Museum Hill and Casino: don't walk there at night.
In general, the Central Business District (CBD) is trouble-free as long as you use a bit of common sense.

Part II: Enjoy the Green City in the Sun

Get out, catch the breeze or the sun, read a book, grab a coffee or a beer, or even a meal, at these nice places to eat and drink with outside terraces or gardens (in random order):


Pic-nics

• Pic-nics are nice in Uhuru Park, City Park (watch out for the monkeys though!), Nairobi Arboretum , Jeevanjee Gardens, Paradise Lost, Nairobi National Park , or on one of these nice new benches anyware in the city.
Nyama choma (roast meat)
• There are several good places to have nyama choma including Kariakor Market, Dagoretti Corner, City Hawkers Market, and Olepolos Country Club on Magadi Rd with excellent views.
Coffee shops
• Savanna: The one @ Nairobi Museum has a very nice terrace overlooking the lush green trees. The one in Upper Hill is also not bad at all.
  
• Artcaffe: Great sandwiches; terrace overlooking the street; wireless Internet access available. Full review by JustDes here.
  
• Nairobi Java House: Most of them (including Java ABC, Java Adams, Java Gigiri, Java Junction, and Java Upper Hill) have nice outdoor seating. Java Adams and Java Gigiri have small play areas. Added advantage is free wireless Internet access.
Nairobi CBD (Central Business District)

• Thorn Tree Cafe (Stanley): Great outdoor terrace; very pleasant place to sit; nice fruit juices; food not extraordinary. A complete review by Biche is available here. 
• Pool Deck (Stanley): Varied buffets; rooftop restaurant.
• Simmers: Lively open air bar; good meat; live music.
Gigiri, Muthaiga, Runda
• Food court (Village Market): Outdoor food court; average food, but excellent ice-cream at Arlecchino.
  
• Epic (Tribe, Village Market): Innovative continental cuisine with African fusion; paved outdoor area.
• La Dolce Vita (Muthaiga Mini Market): Quiet terrace; good selection of Italian wines; excellent pizza oven.
• Cafe des Arts (UN Avenue): Includes a green garden with three banda's and a few tables on the lawn for a sunny afternoon lunch or a romantic outside dinner.
• Tamambo Tapas Bar (Village Market): Delicious and original cocktails and bitings; nice outdoor terrace; good live performances. 
Parklands / Westlands / Spring Valley / Loresho
• Oasis Restaurant (Holiday Inn): By the pool; snacks and international and African buffet.
  
• Gazebo Banda (Jacaranda): Always good for a bite or a drink; beautiful gardens around.
  
• Pizza Garden (Jacaranda): Better-than-average pizzas; small playground.
  
• Pool Bar (Jacaranda): Snacks and drinks in the open air.
• Amani Garden Café: Lovely café offering light lunches and cakes, outside seating, play area for the kids. The garden offers customers a haven of peace where they can enjoy a calm and tranquil setting. Added advantage of supporting a good cause.
• Le Rustique: Outdoor tables under large umbrellas; beautiful garden; open air creperie; mediterranean cuisine; playground.
• Gypsy's: Bar with good burgers; always popular; paved terrace with streetview.
• Zen Garden (Lower Kabete Rd): Asian restaurant with Chinese, Thai and Japanese food.
• About Thyme: Excellent menu which changes weekly; plenty of tables outside.
Karen / Langata

• Jolly Roger Theme Park and Restaurant: Adults can relax outside in the shady comfort of the Jolly Roger Restaurant while the kids have a great time in the playground.
• Simba Saloon: Nice coffees; big playground for the kids; Carnivore food.
  
• Rusty Nail: Beautiful terrace/garden; huge steaks; charming, romantic ambience according to some.
• Karen Blixen Coffee Garden: Lovely setting; spacious outdoor garden full of birds; international menu.
• Talisman: Lovely garden and patio to sit outside, with heaters when cold; varied menu; food is great. Full review by Biche here.
• Rangers (Nairobi National Park main gate): Nice Twiga and Oryx terraces; wooden viewing deck; international cuisine.  
Lavington / Hurlingham
• Mediterraneo (Junction): Italian cuisine; cozy ambience; nice terrace upstairs. Full review by Biche available here and a more recent review by pourkygourmand here.
• For You: Excellent Chinese restaurant with nice Chinese lanterns on the outside; huge garden.
• Osteria del Chianto: Excellent Italian food served in a lovely garden with bonfires and small lamps everywhere.
• Hong's Bakery (next to Yaya): Outside terrace, grass; swing for kids; cake, bread and goodies for sale; nice snacks. The Chicken Teriyaki comes recommended by Peperuka.
• Chez l'Ami: Odd combination of French and Japanese cuisine; good sushi; garden.
• Sippers (Argwings Kodek Rd): Nice outdoor patio and tables; good music; nightlife venue; the roast goat comes highly recommended.
Milimani / Upper Hill
• Flame Tree (Panafric): Has an outdoor section; decent coffee and juices.
• Pool Garden (Panafric): Mainly barbeque and buffet lunches.
• Mandhari (Serena): Al-fresco dining on the terrace; excellent international and fusion cuisine. 
• Pool Bar (Serena): Good snacks; relaxed atmosphere.
• Cafe Maghreb (Serena): Original moroccan cuisine; possibility of al-fresco dining.
• Mukutan Garden Café (Fairview): good coffees and cakes as well as light meals such as gourmet sandwiches, pizzas and quesadillas; tranquil green setting; wireless Internet available. 
• Pwani Pool Restaurant (Fairview): International cuisine in a casual environment by the pool.
A bit out of town
• Cafe Kigwa (Safari Park): Mostly buffet-style; always busy on Sundays for brunch/lunch.
• Olepolos Country Club (Magadi Rd): good nyama choma; excellent views.

For walkers, cyclists, joggers and picnicers: Nairobi gets its forest back

A high-powered alliance of environmentalists, diplomats and parastatals will this week deliver Karura Forest back to Nairobi: safe, beautiful and ready for family rambling and picnics.

The Karura Forest, which spans from the Old Kiambu Road to Limuru Road on the western side of the city, is venue for a grand opening this Saturday 16th May at 10am, to unveil a 4km nature trail, now cleared, staffed, and ready for walkers, joggers and cyclists.

At the instigation of Kenya Forest Service, and with the support of the Friends of Karura, led by the British High Commissioner’s wife Alice Macaire and William Wambuga of the Nairobi Arboretum, the project to restore the forest to use has also drawn on the advice of Kenya’s Nobel prize-winning environmentalist Prof. Wangari Maathai.

Sited alongside the Kitathuru River, the trail had been closed for many years, with no-one going there, said Alice. But it has now been cleared and made safe, and permanently staffed by forest guards. “It’s incredibly beautiful and amazing.”

Transport and guides will also be available for people exploring the deeper forest - the 50 foot waterfall, the famous "Father of Trees", Mau-Mau caves, 50 kms of nature trails through a forest filled with wildlife, a marshland perfect for bird watching, a bamboo jungle, three rivers, a camp site, a historical church hidden deep in a clearing in the wood and many stunning places to picnic.

“We want people to come, see the amazing scenery and fall in love with it so that we can work together to make it safe for all Nairobi kids,” said Alice.

After the grand opening, it is only the 4km trail that will be open to visit at any time. Exploring the caves, water falls, and other nature trails will require bookings to get Forest guards. The Friends of Karura are however working hard to get the forest to the point where it will be safe throughout. “This (the opening of the trail) is our first step,” said Alice.

‘We want to make it safe so that in the future kids can go to the camp site and stay there and learn about the forest.”

There are caves in the forest where people used to go and pray but the pastor of Karura says they have not been there for the last five years.

As the rehabilitation of the forest continues, “we are incredibly lucky to have professional people including the British High commission, UNEP, William of Arboretum, and people who have seen how it’s successfully done, and we shall also include the local community,” said Alice.

“We want people to be able to wake up on a lovely Saturday morning, go up and have a picnic and let the kids run around safely.”

Those attending the grand opening will meet at the Old Kiambu Road Entrance to the Karura Forest, for short inauguration speeches from the Minister for Forestry and Wildlife, Dr. Noah Wekesa, The British High Commissioner, The Director of Kenya Forest Service and the Pastor of Karura.


"It will be wonderful because we shall also have kids of Karura Primary, a school that is inside the forest singing for the people,” said Alice.

Alice encourages all to come and discover the trail: “you will love it”.
