Well, you may already know that I hate most of our local Kenyan music. But once in a while, there are some refreshing Kenyan sounds to be discovered, such as Sauti Sol or Daddy Owen.



And today I am introducing you to some heavenly Kenyan angels. The Moipei triplets Mary, Martha and Magdalene and their younger sister Seraphine form the all girl music group, Moipei Quartet. These talented Maasai girls have very beautiful voices (well trained by their father Nicholas ole Moipei who is also their teacher) and often perform 'a capella' or accompanied by piano only, mostly in classical styles. Some of their songs also bring us a message, like Mbiu ya Mgambo, which highlights the plight of girls in the Maasai community.

Kiriro by Daddy Owen Ft Kerah & Allan Aaron

I am not a big fan of Kenyan popular music. My music players are usually full of African music, mainly West and Central African, but not Kenyan.

But once in a while, there is a Kenyan song that touches me. Like this one called Kiriro, by Daddy Owen Ft Kerah & Allan Aaron. These guys have talent and it's an inspiring gospel song that makes me feel very good and happy - every single time I listen to it.



You see, these guys are really blessed, so let's praise the Lord!

The sexy saxophonist

So why is Esther blowing Hellon's saxophone?

Well, I just did some small research on it and my conclusion is that we may have to attribute this to the sexiness of the saxophone:


• The saxophone is usually used as the main instrument for the background music of love scenes.
• The sax is either held right between someones legs in the crotchal area (drawing attention to said area) or it is played to the side which forces the player to stick out his hips in a sort of thrusting motion
• The sound of the sax is slow, smooth, and reminiscent of a bedroom voice.
• Jazz is meant to be sensual, seductice, and a bit on the daring side; and the saxophone is part of that genre.
  
• The saxophone sound can be intensely, richly complex, almost as complex as the human voice. Its vibrational energy comes close to the flutter and pant of human respiration and it reacts with such sensitivity to the individual player's breath that no two sax players sound precisely alike. Unruly feelings pour out, often carnal feelings.
  
• The way a saxophonist moves in a slow seductive way with closed eyes and the music is usually slow with a haunting melody, so that it almost gives the impression of love-making.
  
• The sax is low-pitched compared to most brass instruments; a low, slow voice can be an aphrodisiac.
  
But Joseph Hellon as a Finger of God church leader should note that the Church doesn't like the sax. Pius X, who became pope in 1903, was quick to see the moral danger posed by the saxophone. An audacious composer had written saxophones into a mass and he didn't like it. He prohibited instruments that could cause "disgust or scandal," and everybody knew which one he meant. The saxophone sounded to Pius X like the work of the devil.

Well, we may understand Esther's recent moves a bit better now. And what about you, do you feel attracted to a sax or a saxophonist?

P.S. The only saxophone-playing U.S. president was Bill Clinton... I think you get my point.

Sauti Sol: Refreshing Kenyan music now available to the world

The refreshingly creative Kenyan band Sauti Sol consists of Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno, who met in high school and originally started as an a capella group.

The group is inspired by the choices, consequences and challenges that the Kenyan youth face and the need to revamp the music industry with a different unique sound that cuts across all age groups. Musically, their inspiration comes from the music of Fadhili Williams, Daudi Kabaka and other established African artists such as Salif Keita and Lokua Kanza. Eclecticsoul describes Sauti Sol's music appropriately as "afro fusion/neo soul sound that soothes, grooves and moves your mind, your body, your soul and takes it to that secret place where music meets heaven".

Their first album "Mwanzo" is an excellent fusion of delightful African sounds with a modern urban feel. Most of the songs are extremely well received when performed live among Sauti Sol's continuously growing fan-base.

The first single from this amazing album is "Lazizi". It was released in February 2009. Here it is:

The complete album "Mwanzo" will be available for download from Amazon from Tuesday, 4th of August 2009.



Sauti Sol will be going on tour to Europe at the end of August. This is a good opportunity for the band to showcase their great talent and show the world a little of Kenya's musical scene. What better way to send the band off than with a live show on Saturday, August 8th, 2009, at the August 7th Memorial Park (Moi Avenue, opposite Railways) from noon to 6 pm, and an exclusive afterparty at Blue Times Lounge (Museum Hill) where you will have the chance to meet the band, grab an autograph, and take a picture. Ayub Ogada re-discovered

Obama's win and an unexpected day off encouraged me to browse through my old music collection and look for some Luo music. And I am very glad I did, since I have now re-discovered Ayub Ogada's album En Mana Kuoyo (meaning "just sand"). Ogada's music is based on repetitious patterns plucked on the nyatiti, a stringed instrument reminiscent of the lyre, combined with his soft voice.

Ayub Ogada is a Luo and a traveller in body and mind. At the tender age of six, Ayub accompanied his father and mother when they took their musical act on tour, performing a duet playing Luo songs on the US college circuit. Ayub later went back to Kenya where he went into a Catholic school run by nuns and then an English boarding school. His education and his outstanding ability with percussion landed him a position with the French Cultural Centre in Nairobi, composing modern and traditional music for various productions. Such events proved formative. The wide-eyed youth with his images of America would nurture a respect for his own tradition but a hunger to develop it and nourish his own creativity. Like many of Kenya's youth, Ayub picked up on the flotsam of the global music tide: soul, jazz, Latin. Kenya's attractiveness to citizens of neighboring countries like Congo and Tanzania added spice to local flavours such as benga, a Luo-derived, guitar-based rhythm popular in the 70s and the 80s (in Luo, 'benga' means soft and beautiful). In 1979, Ayub co-founded the African Heritage Band, potently combining tradtional rhythms with vintage and modern instrumentation. Six years, two albums and a tour of Europe later, bolstered by a series of lucrative movie roles (he played a tacit but impressive Mau Mau heavy in the film 'Kitchen Toto'), Ayub decided to check whether the world really was his oyster. Ayub arrived in the UK in 1986 and was quickly snapped up by London's African music scene. For a time Ayub played in the promising but occasionally volatile rumba band Taxi Pata Pata, along with guitarist Zak Sikobe, who he grazed knees with back in Kenya. In 1993, Ayub recorded the album En Mana Kuoyo on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. His music has also been heard on the soundtrack of the 2000 release of 'I Dreamed of Africa' and the 2005 film 'The Constant Gardener'. He has also collaborated with Susheela Raman on several tracks on her 'Salt Rain' album, such as 'O Rama'. His piece, 'Kothbiro' appears in the soundtrack of the Méxican Film 'The Blue Room' based on the novel of George Simenon. Ayub Ogada's music was used in the soundtrack for Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman's BBC series Long Way Round. In addition, Ayub Ogada has collaborated with the Afro Celt Sound System on their first and fourth releases. In 2005, Ayub performed at the Live 8 concert, Eden Project as the opening act performing on a large replica of an historic Egyptian lyre. Ayub Ogada moved back to Kenya in 2007.

On the CD I just re-discovered, En Mana Kuoyo, Ayub sings gentle, almost hypnotic, and yet ultimately relaxed melodies concerning home, cattle herding, his instrument, the weather, and injustice. The music is spacious and at the same time stimulating. A brilliant CD, and I am looking forward to hearing more from him.

So as Kenyans wait for a tourism boost after Obama's election victory , we may as well expect some increased interest in Kenya's interesting culture and music, and I hope Ayub Ogada will now be (re-) discovered by many more people.

Uaso Nyrobi

Muthoni - a Nairobi born and raised singer-songwriter and social entrepreneur -  sings about Nairobi in her wonderful new reggae-soul-jazz hit Cool Waters. Indeed, in 1899, Mile 327 of the East African Railway was established on a patch of papyrus bog known as Uaso Nyrobi (Maasai for ‘place of cold waters’), the last area of flat land where the engineers camped to figure out their ascent up the eastern shoulder of the Great Rift Valley. 

Over the years, Nairobi has been referred to by different nicknames, including the following:
• Nairobi
• Nyrobi (referring to the Maasai word mentioned above)
• City in the Sun
• Green City in the Sun
• Safari Capital of the World
• Nairobbery (referring to the insecurity situation in Nairobi)
