December 17th is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Yes, another International Day!
A gathering in Nairobi will include a silent public procession, starting at Koinange Street, and ending at the Sarakasi Dome, in Ngara. Events will include testimonies by sex workers as well as edutainment in the form of theatre, music, dance, and spoken word. The events are free and the dress code for this day will be red (sex worker rights) and black (Africa). I am giving you Jessica Alba's suggestion for the dress code in the picture.
The International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers aims to raise awareness of the violence and abuse perpetrated on sex workers.
Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will be marking this day for the first time this year.
When asked to comment on her reasons for organizing this event in Nairobi, Dorothy Ogutu, a sex worker activist, said:
As the saying goes, sex work is the oldest profession, and yet it is the one industry that records the highest rate of violence and brutality. By marking this day, we are calling for an end to violence in a working community that has experienced and continues to experience so much of it. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere.”

The Kenyan TV programme Makutano Junction is gaining new fans and challenging old ideas in UK schools. Kenyan viewers have been caught up in tales of people who live, do business, fall in love, get sick or get drunk in the fictional town of Makutano. UK teachers attend induction days, where they are familiarised with programme and supporting material – including a website, and explore how to use them in lessons. With cultural awareness an increasingly important part of UK education, a global dimension is now compulsory in the secondary curriculum, and teachers need to find ways of including it. After watching clips from the programme, children are encouraged to discuss – or develop role plays – based on issues raised in packaged themes such as Exploring Kenya; Living with HIV and AIDS; the Millennium Development Goals and Me.
“It’s fascinating when you go into these schools,” says Lloyd Morgan, one of the programme makers. “I find it really shocking what kids’ perceptions are – it’s quite an eye opener. Their perceptions are that Africa is very hot, very dirty and very poor, with lots of wild animals and mud huts. Then we show Makutano. In it we have got characters who are dressed smartly, paint their nails and wear groovy jeans.”
So what do British children make of Kenya’s skyscrapers, people who wear fashionable jeans, own a business and use mobile phones? At first, they can be surprised. Lloyd Morgan recalls, “One boy said, 'But Miss, she has a mobile phone. They don’t have mobile phones in Africa.’” Challenging stereotypes is a large part of what the initiative is about.
Back here in Kenya though, we have now realized that Shuga is a more exciting approach for reaching our young people. Shuga follows the lives and loves of a group of cool young students whose bright lives and fabulous futures are balanced on a knife-edge due to their love of risk and danger. Well, I just did some small research on it and my conclusion is that we may have to attribute this to the sexiness of the saxophone:

Last year, the Cry Baby turned out to be my perfect Valentines gift. My girl just loved it, and we had good fun during a couple of social parties, with special thanks to the remote control. The Cry Baby has now been safely stored though, and we hardly use it anymore.

Others, who are not that interested in the sex aspects, are saying Kenya has actually great potential for a vibrant movie industry.

Yes, I know we have all been enjoying plenty of nyama choma parties after I revealed this innovation. But, now it turns out that all the roasted meat is not good for you after all. Kenyan teens are having sex. And apparently they have no clue on how to go about it.
A report by the Nairobi-based Centre for the Study of Adolescents (CSA) reports that 40 percent of girls and 50 percent of boys reported having had sex before their 19th birthday, a significant minority reported having sex with more than one partner in the previous six months. --->>> Those are the reported figures, so what are the real figures?
The report also confirms that the youth are having sex but they lack vital information on sexual and reproductive health.
Sexual education in schools is watered down. What we have is information that barely cratches the surface, and in the end the young people are left with many gaps to be filled. They are curious and what they do is fill the gaps through talking to friends and this leads to experimentation with wrong information. --->>> Do we need sex education in our schools, or should our teens just experiment, or both? I had both, and I am still doing fine.
A separate study by CSA in 2008 recorded an estimated 5.5 million girls between ages of 15 to 19 years give birth annually in Kenya --->>> Do we even have so many girls in that age group in Kenya? Must be something wrong with the figures here?
The report further indicated this same group has more than one million unsafe abortions each year. --->>> Please, can we all become gay? Problem solved.
Forty-seven percent of the teens surveyed either had a child, were pregnant, or had undergone an abortion by age 20. --->>> 47 percent? Shocking!
Following the Pope’s irresponsible statement in Cameroon over the use of condoms in relation to HIV/AIDS, Nathan Geffen and Rebecca Hodes of Treatment Action Campaign charge that such papal views are misguided and fly in the face of evidence around the efficacy of both condom use and sex education for adolescents. Preaching abstinence to many communities in Africa is alienating and irrelevant.
Simon Collery also did an excellent post on this issue. He is asking "Why is abstinence not proposed as a strategy to reduce alcohol or drug dependency? How about obesity as a result of overeating?" and "Why is abstinence not proposed as a strategy to reduce crime?" I think you are getting the analogy with abstinence from sex. Simon also vividly illustrates his point with an example from Nyanza: "A certain Mr Pope, a man without an electoral mandate or, indeed, without any experience of sexual intercourse or sexual relationships, thinks that abstinence is the only way to avoid HIV. Well, Mr Pope, you’re quite wrong. In Nyanza province in Kenya, women are more likely to contract HIV from their husbands. Husbands also contract HIV from their wives."

If you're a Kenyan, chances are high that you are a sweetie. Actually about three times sweeter than a Tanzanian or a Ugandan. Why? Because we consume too much sugar! In 2005, per capita consumption of sugar in Kenya was 22.6 kg, while in Tanzania it was only 7.2 kg and in Uganda 9.7 kg. Why are Kenyans consuming 3 times more sugar than their neighbours? I don't know. But I know sugar is not healthy. Dr Nancy Appleton has identified 146 Reasons Why Sugar Is Ruining Your Health, one of them being the fact that high refined sugar diet reduces learning capacity. Do we want Kenyans to become dumber than their Tanzanian and Ugandan friends? And something even more worrying can be found here: a person who consumes too much refined sugar can become impotent or have sexual problems and sex related diseases at the age of forty or younger. We have all made very nice New Year's resolutions for 2009. My resolution is to cut down on sugar consumption: a ban on soda's (after seeing the amount of sugar in Coke here), no sugar in my coffee, and less sugar in my tea. Comments: May have had running water at one time. Virtually awash in human effluvia. Whilst labeled gender specific, in actual fact men, women and ?? all come and go as they please. Also used for sex by the resident prostitutes. Quite simply, the most disgusting toilets I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.
