Free SMS from Gmail to Safaricom

Did you know that you can now send free SMS to your friends on Safaricom directly from your Gmail account? Try Gmail SMS and start texting your friends from your computer.

You can send SMS messages to your contacts’ mobile phones using Gmail Chat. If your contact replies, the text message response will appear as a reply in Chat. These conversations are stored in your Chat history just like regular chats.





Sending and receiving a message from Gmail to any phone is free. When replying with an SMS from phone to Gmail, you will be charged a regular SMS rate by your mobile provider. Gmail SMS is currently available in Kenya with Safaricom.


Here's how to use Gmail SMS:

1. Log into your Gmail account. In the Send SMS box above Chat, enter the phone number you want to send a SMS to.
2. In the dialog box, enter Contact name of the SMS recipient and check that country and phone number are correct. Then, click Save.
3. Type your message in the chat window and hit Enter.
4. Your message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

Try it out! It seems to work fine.

SMALL UPDATE: In some cases, e.g. when you are logging in to your Gmail account from abroad, the Gmail SMS feature is not automatically activated (and you can't see the Send SMS box in Gmail). Here's a solution. Try going to Google Labs, select Gmail Labs and enable "SMS in Chat gadget" and "Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat". That should do the trick, like it did for @kenyanpundit.

Gmail for African snails

The Internet is still relatively slow in many places in Africa. Google has now also realized this and even acted upon it by launching a new feature in Gmail Labs: Inbox preview.


While Gmail is loading, a simple, static preview of your inbox with your ten most recent messages is displayed. This allows users to be productive even before Gmail has completed loading.


Turn it on from the Labs tab under Settings and, if you're on a slow connection, you'll know from the start if it's worth the wait. I tried it out, and the difference is remarkable indeed.



So this is really a very cool development by Google engineers, but interestingly, the Labs tab under Settings is NOT available when you are using the Basic HTML View rather than the Standard View to access your Gmail, and it is exactly this Basic HTML View which is used by many Gmail users with snail connections. Google, are you listening? Another improvement would be to allow users to set the number of recent messages to be displayed in Inbox preview, since different users receive different numbers of messages and have different frequencies of accessing their Gmail accounts as well.

The monetary value of Kenyan Tweets

I did a rather controversial post recently on the monetary value of Kenyan blogs. And today, the growing popularity of the micro-blogging site Twitter in Kenya made me wonder whether Tweets also have a value. And yes, apparently some people sell their Twitter profile background graphic to advertisers at a price based on various factors. You can use What's Your Tweet Worth? to calculate the approximate value of your Tweet per month by simply entering a username into the site. I just ran the applet for 10 of my favourite Kenyan Tweets, and here are the results:

• intelligensia: US$64.15/month
• JustDes: US$32.28/month
• kaboro: US$40.82/month
• kenyanpundit: US$44.33/month

These ten tweets give us a total of US$423.04. That's about KShs 34,000 - every month. With that kind of budget, the ten of us could organize some nice choma party - every month.


The site doesn’t provide any insights on how the valuation is calculated, so please take this with the usual pinch of salt.

DVD's @ 200 bob

I reported earlier about the first Kenyan Amazon. Well, it looks like we have a second one now, at least for DVD's: Quick Flicks Store. They claim to be Kenya's premier online DVD store and are selling DVD's from KSh 200. You can browse their online catalogue and place an order. The DVD's are then delivered by courier (at KSh 100) to your doorstep within Nairobi and its environs in 1-2 days. You pay cash on delivery (currently the only payment option).


Anyone tried this service? Could it be trusted (they only give a mobile phone number as contact on their site...)?

Google Chrome is coming soon to a screen near you!

Later today you will be able to download what looks like a ground breaking new web browser called 'Google Chrome' in more than 100 countries. I am assuming Kenya will be one of these countries.

Google Chrome promises to be clean and fast. And it will feature the tab bar above the address bar. All of the code will be open source.

Google Chrome will probably be available from gears.google.com/chrome
UPDATE (3 Sep 2008): Google Chrome is now available for download. www.google.com/chrome seems to work better than the one mentioned above.

The First Kenyan Amazon

Books First has launched its online bookstore, the first e-commerce website by a local bookshop. The website carries all of Books First's titles currently available in their shop (over 7,000 different titles in 20 categories), and customers can conveniently order over the Internet and pay via Safaricom's M-PESA service. Alternatively, payments can be made by cash on delivery, cheques and bank deposits. Books First is offering free delivery within Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD). They also deliver to other places in Kenya at a small fee, and they even do international deliveries!
